Dieter Schaub still holds a 2.2% stake in the asset management company Josef Schaub GbR. Thomas Schaub's grandfather, Josef Schaub, was a co-founder of the Rheinpfalz and laid the foundations for the Medien Union publishing group. • Josef Schaub
a publisher from the Palatinate region, founded the Neue Pfälzische Landeszeitung in 1921 and was its deputy managing director when the National Socialists closed the newspaper and banned Schaub from working in the industry. After the war, the French occupying forces asked him if he could develop a concept for a newspaper in the western Palatinate. This is how the Rheinpfalz was created in 1945, which Schaub managed for over 20 years before handing over the role to his son Dieter and then to his grandson Thomas. Schaub died in 1978.
