Neue Pressegesellschaft

Neue Pressegesellschaft mbH & Co. KG (NPG) is one of the largest regional media houses in southern and eastern Germany. It combines print, online, and radio operations and reaches over 1.1 million daily readers through newspapers including Südwest Presse, Märkische Oderzeitung, and Lausitzer Rundschau. The portfolio is supplemented by high-reach online portals including swp.de, moz.de, and lr-online.de. NPG also holds stakes in regional radio stations including Radio Regenbogen, Radio 7, and Berliner Rundfunk.
NPG is a significant player in German regional journalism, holding a dominant market position through its size and numerous local editions. In 2025, Neue Pressegesellschaft acquired Medienholding Süd from Südwestdeutsche Medienholding (SWMH), thereby acquiring Stuttgarter Zeitung, Stuttgarter Nachrichten, and Schwarzwälder Bote. This acquisition further consolidated NPG's market position in Baden-Württemberg.
The Federal Cartel Office approved the acquisition, though industry associations and trade unions criticized it. Critics argue the merger deepens NPG's monopoly power in the print and media market, threatening media diversity and democracy in southwestern Germany. Trade union ver.di has additionally expressed concerns about anticipated cost cuts in newsrooms that could impair news coverage.
NPG is owned by the Aberle and Ebner families. Historically, NPG emerged from Südwest Presse and has expanded its portfolio through successive acquisitions and mergers. Through its market reach, regional presence, and economic scale, NPG exercises considerable influence over public opinion formation in several German federal states.
