  • Erich Brost
    Born in 1903 in Elbing in West Prussia, he was an editor at the Danziger Volksstimme at a young age. He tried to prevent the rise of the National Socialists in the Free City. But the people of Gdansk, not realising that they were bringing about the downfall of their city and the loss of their homeland, drove him out.
  • Jakob Funke
    also worked as a journalist in his younger years. The period of National Socialism is a difficult chapter in his life. Various sources attest to his distanced relationship with the Nazis. Nevertheless, he became a member of the NSDAP. After the end of the Second World War, he and Brost receive a licence from the British occupying power to set up an independent daily newspaper. Funke becomes a member of the CDU.
  • Jakob Funke
    In April 1948, Erich Brost founds the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ) together with Jakob Funke. Brost takes on the role of editor-in-chief, Funke manages the publishing house. Brost was editor-in-chief of the WAZ until 1970 and subsequently its publisher until his death in 1995. The WAZ developed into the WAZ Media Group, today's FUNKE Media Group, through acquisitions, start-ups and shareholdings. Today, FUNKE focuses on three business areas: Regional Media, Magazines and Digital. Today, FUNKE is one of the largest and most successful media companies in the whole of Germany.

She has worked at FUNKE since 1991 and most recently headed the Group Controlling division since 2010 and the Corporate Finance division since 2017. During this time, she played a key role in the successful takeover and integration of Axel Springer's newspaper and magazine titles from 2014 onwards. During her time at FUNKE, Kasik also managed Group-wide strategy projects and implemented Group-wide process optimisations and financing projects with her teams.
  • Dr. Christoph Rüth
    has been Group Managing Director of the FUNKE Media Group since 2020. He is also Managing Director of FUNKE Medien NRW, majority shareholder of Zeitungsverlag Niederrhein, which publishes the WAZ. The media manager comes from the MADSACK Media Group, where he was responsible for operations. Previously, he was Managing Director of the Financial Times Deutschland and the subscription newspapers at Axel Springer. Today's FUNKE newspapers Berliner Morgenpost and Hamburger Abendblatt were part of his portfolio there. Christoph Rüth is responsible for the FUNKE newspaper brands across all distribution channels, including their marketing and the necessary units at FUNKE Digital.

  • Julia Becker
    has been Chairwoman of the Supervisory Board of FUNKE since 1 January 2018. Together with her mother Petra Grotkamp and her siblings Nora Marx and Niklas Wilcke, she is a shareholder of the company. She is the granddaughter of Jakob Funke, who founded the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ) in Essen together with Erich Brost in 1948, laying the foundation for the successful media company. Julia Becker was born in Essen in 1972 and grew up with two siblings. After leaving school, she studied German, English and Theatre Studies in Munich and Münster, and later German, English and Political Science. The mother of three is married to Otto Becker, former show jumper, team Olympic champion and current head coach of the German show jumpers. Julia Becker has been a member of the Supervisory Board and the Shareholders' Committee of the Essen-based family business since her mother Petra Grotkamp acquired a majority stake in the FUNKE Media Group in 2012. She then took over the chairmanship of the Supervisory Board from her mother at the beginning of 2018.
  • Petra Grotkamp
    was born in 1943 and is the youngest of four daughters of Jakob Funke, the conservative co-founder of WAZ. In 1975, together with her sisters Ute de Graffenried, Gisela Holthoff and Renate Schubries, she inherited half of the company that her father had founded together with Erich Brost. In 1986, she married Günther Grotkamp, a close confidant of her father's for many years and Managing Director of the WAZ media group. He is considered the architect of the ‘WAZ model’ due to his strategic masterpieces and is responsible for numerous company acquisitions and the expansion of WAZ into a nationally renowned media group. In 2012, Petra Grotkamp took over the majority of the company from the heirs of Erich Brost. As part of the transaction at the time, the Group was renamed FUNKE Mediengruppe.
  • Nora Marx
    was born in Essen in 1976 and is married. After graduating from high school, she gained her first experience in advertising and marketing agencies in the areas of copywriting, consulting and public relations. She then studied German and political science at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf from 1997. Parallel to her studies, she worked freelance for FUNKE's Neue Ruhr / Neue Rhein Zeitung (NRZ) and the magazine SMAG. She graduated in 2002 with a Master of Arts degree. From 2003 Nora Marx worked as a freelance copywriter for various advertising and marketing agencies. She was also self-employed with the artist agency pro:cdur. The agency worked primarily in the areas of cabaret and music cabaret.
  • Niklas Jakob Wilcke
    was born in Essen in 1967 and is married. He studied law at the Ruhr University in Bochum and was admitted to the bar after completing his first and second state examinations at the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court in 1995 and 1997. Immediately after being admitted, he went to the UK for a year and worked as a lawyer in London. Niklas Wilcke has been working as a lawyer in Essen since 1998 and is managing partner of the law firm KPW Rechtsanwälte. In addition to his legal and advisory work, Niklas Jakob Wilcke is also a speaker at training courses and lectures in companies.
