Luisa Neubauer

Luisa-Marie Neubauer, born on April 21, 1996, in Hamburg, is one of Germany's best-known climate activists and one of the key organizers of Fridays for Future in Germany. She came to public prominence in 2018, following a meeting with Greta Thunberg, among other events, and played a key role in the major school strikes and mass protests of 2018 and 2019. Neubauer was also a co-plaintiff in the constitutional complaint “Neubauer et al. v. Germany,” whose ruling on March 24, 2021, had far-reaching consequences for German climate protection law.
In addition to her activism, she has published several books and articles, often in collaboration with other authors, journalists, and activists (such as Bernd Ulrich and her grandmother Dagmar Reemtsma). She has also made a name for herself internationally as a co-author of articles on the history and strategy of the climate movement. She also publishes regularly in various newspapers, magazines, and blogs on topics related to climate policy, feminism, and democracy.
Neubauer has a strong online presence: her Instagram and Twitter accounts (inactive) reach a wide audience, and Neubauer uses her reach to address demands, mobilizations, and analyses to young target groups, but also as the face of the climate movement to established politicians.
Criticism of Neubauer comes mainly from the right-wing and conservative camps, but also from within the climate movement itself. The criticism sometimes refers to her family background in a wealthy milieu and the accusation that she does not always act in accordance with her climate demands. She was also part of the public debate about the directional dispute within and outside the climate movement about the right path to take—mass mobilization or more radical forms of protest. Neubauer thus acts as an important mediator between the climate movement, science, and civil society, but at the same time is a recurring target of political and media disputes.
She is now a frequent guest on talk shows and panel discussions as a political figure, and is also active as an author. She lives in Berlin, and in 2023 it was revealed that her partner is Louis Klamroth, journalist and host of the talk and discussion show “Hart, aber Fair” (Tough but Fair). Her cousin Carla Reemtsma is also politically active in the climate movement and was previously press spokesperson for Fridays for Future.

Facts
| Topics Covered / Focus Areas | Luisa Neubauer is primarily involved in climate policy and climate-related economic and social issues. She has become known for her strong criticism of what she sees as the German government's inadequate climate policy and the debate on phasing out coal in Germany. She also addresses issues relating to democracy, the rise of the far right, feminism, and sexism on the internet. |
|---|---|
| Views / Values / Political Stances | Luisa Neubauer represents a liberal-progressive political stance that is strongly formulated around her themes of climate protection, democracy, and feminism. She explicitly advocates for an internationally oriented, generationally equitable climate policy, is committed to democracy and against the rise of the AfD, as well as hate speech and sexism on the internet. In this regard, she can be classified as belonging to the liberal-progressive camp. |
| Mode of Delivery | Her video clips, television appearances, and general media presence are characterized by an impressive seriousness. She speaks factually, informatively, and eloquently. Her tone is often appealing and moralizing, or at times indignant and accusatory. In between, she also posted a few snippets from her everyday life (in Stories or Reels format), which portray a relaxed, young, urban, affluent lifestyle. |
| Reputation | Luisa Neubauer is widely known throughout society as the face of the German climate movement. She has a good reputation in the liberal-progressive camp, and thanks to her collaborations with scientists, authors, and lawyers on issues of climate policy and climate science communication, her posts and commitments are perceived as factual, honest, but also politically driven. The right-wing and conservative camps see her as disruptive, but also aloof or politically motivated, and she is sometimes confronted with harsh attacks (ranging from hate speech to sexualized death threats). In the more left-wing, even activist camp, she is sometimes seen as too politically involved, bourgeois, and power-conscious. |
| Target Audience | On the one hand, her audience is young people between the ages of 14 and 35, based on their age and level of engagement. However, her book formats and their broader political activities are aimed at the general public. Her online presence is therefore a mixture of addressing young women, climate-conscious youth, but also general citizens who are committed to democracy and are against right-wing extremism. |
| Part of Network or Campaign | Luisa Neubauer is best known as the face and press spokesperson for Fridays for Future Germany, where she continues to be active. She is also a member of Alliance 90/The Greens and was previously a member of the Green Youth. She is also an author and speaker and appears at various events. |
|---|---|
| Cross-Posting & Friends | Her posts and contributions were shared widely, especially in the beginning, by Fridays for Future Germany and the international network, as well as her fellow activists. Greta Thunberg was a long-time ally of Neubauer's until they fell out over differing positions on the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, and the Gaza war. Other informal networks are more focused on campaigns and joint engagement on various issues, including musicians, Green Party politicians, and feminists. |
| Endorsements & Recognitions | Luisa Neubauer has been recognized by numerous politicians and broad sections of the established liberal-progressive civil society for her achievements and commitment to the climate. Together with other activists, including Greta Thunberg, she was received for talks by Emmanuel Macron, Angela Merkel, and other EU politicians at the EU summit in Sibiu in 2019. Since 2019, there have been numerous profiles and interviews with her in established German and international media. In 2021, she received the Solar Prize for her outstanding commitment to climate policy; in 2022, she was included in the Time Next 100 list. She has also received other civil society and church awards. |
