Stuttgarter Nachrichten is a German daily newspaper established on November 12, 1946, under license from the American military government. Its founders included Henry Bernhard, Otto Färber, and Erwin Schoettle. The newspaper's editorial office and publishing house are traditionally located in the Pressehaus Stuttgart in the Möhringen district. Originally conceived as an independent publication, Stuttgarter Nachrichten entered into regional cooperation agreements relatively early and has supplied national news content to other newspapers since 1972.
Stuttgarter Nachrichten is published jointly with Stuttgarter Zeitung by Pressehaus Stuttgart. The two newspapers reach a combined audience of approximately 470,000 readers across print and digital editions, making them among the widest-reaching media outlets in Baden-Württemberg. Although the publications maintain distinct designs and identities, they share substantially unified editorial content. Since 2016, both newspapers operate under an editorial partnership while maintaining separate exclusive authors and editors-in-chief for each publication. The newspaper continues to position itself as a significant contributor to Stuttgart's local public sphere.
In 2025, Neue Pressegesellschaft (NPG) GmbH, owned by the Ebner family and Ruth Aberle, acquired an 82% stake in Medienholding Süd, the holding company that owns both Stuttgarter Nachrichten and Stuttgarter Zeitung. The acquisition also included their local editions, Eßlinger Zeitung, Schwarzwälder Bote, and related district newspapers. The acquisition significantly expanded media concentration in the greater Stuttgart area and the Swabia region. The Bundeskartellamt (Federal Cartel Office) criticized the deal for intensifying market concentration, as NPG newspapers such as Südwest Presse were often the only competitors to the Stuttgart papers in Swabia.

Meta Data

The Stuttgarter Nachrichten and Stuttgarter Zeitung are virtually identical in terms of content, but their publishing structures and editorial offices are organizationally separate. All articles and commentaries can be found in both media, but sometimes in different places.

From a business and statistical perspective, the two media outlets are listed together, which obscures their individual sales and subscription figures at IVW. For the Media Ownership Monitor Germany, we have decided to present the newspapers as separate entities for methodological reasons, as this reflects the impression of readers.
